Mehrteiliger Nahrungswärmer (Authepsa) aus Bronze, römisch, 1. Jhdt. n. Chr.
Zweiteiliger Nahrungswärmer aus niedrigem doppelwandigen Zylinder, über kurzem Schacht mit hohem Zylinder mit Deckel verbunden, in den ein Gefäß mit Flüssigkeit oder Nahrung eingesetzt und vom Verbindungschacht her von unten beheizt werden konnte. Ausgesprochen seltenes und gut erhaltenes multifunktionales Küchengerät aus frührömischer Zeit. Einige gute, meist weniger komplexe Vergleichsstücke stammen aus hochstehenden Haushalten der römischen Vesuvstädte.
Die gesamte Konstruktion unten durch drei massiv gegossene Füße mit horizontalem Steg auf der Innenseite getragen, zwei schräg nach außen weisend am hohen Zylinder, einer auf der Außenseite des doppelwandigen Zylinders. Alle Füße gleich gestaltet: Über einer trommelförmigen, profilierten und mittig eingezogenen Basis ein Raubkatzenfuß. Auf diesen folgt nach einem floral gestalteten Übergang in der Mitte ein leicht nach vorne durchgebogener Oberkörper eines Eroten mit Knabenfrisur und Flügeln. Antlitz und anatomische Details fein ausgearbeitet. Höhe der Füße ca. 30 cm.
Die massiv gegossenen Henkel an den beiden Längsseiten sind von hoher künstlerischer Qualität und bieten dem Betrachter ein Vexierspiel. Zum einen können die Komponenten als rein florale Ornamentik mit Blättern, Ranken und Früchten gesehen werden. Die Anordnung von Ranken und Blättern lässt aber zugleich eine Deutung als maskenhafte Fratze aus vegetabilen Elementen zu, ähnlich einem Bild des Arcimboldo. Eine weitere der zeitgenössischen antiken Kunst voll entsprechende Lesart wäre ein phallisches Symbol, das durch die beiden Früchte und das zentrale lange Blatt gebildet wird. Mit diesen Henkeln konnte der gesamte Apparat getragen und an den gewünschten Platz verbracht werden.
Drei Vogelskulpturen, vollplastisch ausgearbeit, lassen sich aufgrund der Gestaltung von Füßen, Gefieder, Hals und Schnabel wohl recht sicher als Gänse deuten.
Aus Pompeji sind auch einfache Authepsae mit nur einem hohen Zylinder auf drei Füßen bekannt, deren Aufbau sonst dem hier vorhandenen hohen Zylinder entspricht.
Länge der gesamten Apparatur ca. 60 cm, Höhe ca. 70 cm, Breite ca. 26 cm. Einzelne Fehlstellen in der Wandung der Zylinder ergänzt, die jedoch großteils erhalten ist. Die Henkel an den Längsseiten wieder modern montiert. Die Unterseite der Apparatur durch eine Plexiglasplatte verstärkt, um den heute durch Auflösung der Weichlötung teils losen Bestandteilen eine stabile Grundlage zum Aufstellen in ihrer Gesamtheit zu bieten.
Äußerst seltenes und komplex konstruiertes römisches Bronzegerät mit Appliken von hoher künstlerischer Qualität, wie es nur in vornehmen Haushalten der Oberschicht zu finden war.
Provenienz: Aus rheinischer Privatsammlung, erworben Ende der 80er Jahre bei Kunsthändler M. P. mit Sitz in Aachen und Brüssel. Von diesem 1987 von belgischem Sammler erworben, der das Objekt 1971 von einem Kunsthändler in Brüssel erwarb.

A Roman multi-part food warmer (authepsa) made of bronze, 1st century A.D._x000B_Two-part food warmer made of a low double-walled cylinder, connected by a short shaft to a high cylinder with a lid, into which a vessel with liquid or food could be inserted and heated from below by the connecting shaft. Extremely rare and well-preserved multifunctional kitchen utensil from early Roman times. Some good, mostly less complex comparative pieces come from high-status households in the Roman cities of Vesuvius._x000B_The entire construction is supported at the bottom by three solid cast feet with a horizontal bar on the inside. Two diagonally outwardly whitening on the high cylinder, one on the outside of the double-walled cylinder. All feet of the same design: Above a drum-shaped, profiled and centrally indented base a predatory cat's foot, after a florally designed transition in the centre followed by a slightly forwardly curved upper body of an eros with boy's hairdo and wings. Face and anatomical details finely worked out. Height of the feet ca. 30 cm._x000B_The solid cast handles on the two long sides are of high artistic quality and offer the viewer a conundrum. On the one hand, the components can be seen as purely floral ornamentation with leaves, tendrils and fruits. At the same time, however, the arrangement of tendrils and leaves allows an interpretation as a mask-like grimace of vegetal elements, similar to a painting by Arcimboldo. Another reading fully in line with contemporary antique art would be a phallic symbol formed by the two fruits and the central long leaf. With these handles the whole apparatus could be carried and moved to the desired place._x000B_Three fully sculpted bird sculptures can probably be interpreted quite reliably as geese on the basis of the design of the feet, plumage, neck and beak. _x000B_A complex authepsa from Stabiae is a good comparison for the entire construction. Here, too, the apparatus consists of a tall cylinder with a lid, a similar connecting shaft and a double-walled cylinder, which is, however, interrupted on one side and allows one to look into the open interior. This interrupted cylinder is also crowned at the top by bird sculptures. In this case, however, the very similar construction is integrated into a rectangular "ash container" as a base, which has four feet on the outer sides. Heating was provided by glowing coals in the open interior of the double-walled cylinder. _x000B_Length of the entire apparatus ca. 60 cm, height ca. 70 cm, width ca. 26 cm. Some missing parts in the wall of the cylinders, which is largely preserved. The handles on the long sides reassembled in a modern manner. The underside of the apparatus reinforced by a plexiglass plate to provide a stable base for the components, which are now partly loose due to the dissolution of the soft soldering, to stand on in their entirety. Extremely rare and complexly constructed Roman bronze utensil with fittings of high artistic quality, as it was only found in distinguished households of the upper class._x000B_Provenance: From a private collection in the Rhineland, acquired in the late 1980s from art dealer M.
