Mikhail Petrovich Artsybashev (1878-1927)
Appointing an agent in the US. 1922
Autograph letter signed to Bernard Guilbert Guerney, Moscow, 19 ?July 1922.

In Russian. 1¼ pages, 227 x 181mm. Envelope.

Appointing Frida Strindberg as his American representative. Artsybashev informs Guerney that Frida Strindberg will represent him in America and pass on his new stories: she is not however competent to take on the full translation of his stories; he goes on to complain about the difficult lot of the writer.

Frida Strindberg (1872-1942) was a writer and translator; she had been married to August Strindberg from 1893 to 1895. At this time she was living in New York, working in part for Fox Films. The recipient, Bernard G. Guerney (1894-1979) was a Russian-born writer, publisher and book-seller: he is particularly acclaimed as a translator of Russian literature, including of Gogol's Dead Souls. Artsybashev is best known for the novel Sanin (1907), which included remarkably explicit scenes for the period. He was to emigrate to Poland in the year following this, later taking Polish citizenship and becoming an implacable enemy of Bolshevism.
