A MUSEUM TREE SHAPED CARVED OAKWOOD GUN CABINET FROM THE PROPERTY OF KING ALBERT OF SAXONY - Dresden, Möbelfabrik Otto Schubert, dated 1879 - The carved oak one-door corner gun cabinet in shape of a tree, inside with mirror, iron construction and wood, crowned by an winged eagle. The interior features a five-gun holster and mirrored back panels. Two plaques on the inside of the door, one with the dedicatory inscription: "Gift of Her Majesty Queen Carola to your husband Se. Majesty King Albert Christmas 1879.”, the second plaque with the manufacturer's information: “Otto Schubert Möbelfabrik Dresden 1879”. Slight signs of age - King Albert of Saxony (1828-1902), as a Christmas present from his wife Queen Carola of Saxony (1833-1907) in 1887 for the Royal Saxon hunting lodge in Wermsdorf. Private collection Southern Germany. Exposition: Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Schloss Hubertusburg, Wermsdorf: Raumschiff Hubertusburg. Traumschloss im Wandel. 15. May 2022 - 31. October 2022. Lit. Saxon Main State Archive inventory 1070, No. 499 - Inventory of Schloss Wermsdorf This extremely original and unusual piece of furniture in the form of a tree can be described as unique in its design. Although there is mostly historicist furniture from Switzerland, which also takes up depictions of nature, it is not so individually and carefully crafted. The plaques on the inside of the door provide precise information about the owner, the reason for manufacture and the manufacturer. The gun cabinet was a Christmas present from Queen Carola of Saxony to her husband, King Albert of Saxony, in 1879. Due to the naturalistic design as a tree and the function of storing weapons, the assumption arises that the furniture was intended for one of the country palaces of the royal family. Unfortunately, the furniture has lost the usual inventory labels on the back. But those mentioned have been preserved in the Saxon State Archives in Dresden, there are four labels in total, with following inscriptions: Inventory of the Royal House Marshal Office, The Royal. Castle Wermsdorf re. 499/ Saxon Main State Archive Dresden: 10701 State Chancellery No. 499/ Attachment to the State Treaty on the property dispute with the former Royal House of June 25, 1924 box 613 and Saxon. State Main Archive Dresden Saxon. State Chancellery No. 499. - The inventory of the Wermsdorf hunting lodge has also been preserved in the State Archives. In 1874, King Albert took over the old Castle Wermsdorf and expanded it into his preferred hunting lodge. The Royal Couple now made regular stops in Wermsdorf and held the annual Royal hunt there. With the end of the Wettin regency in 1918, parts of the valuable inventory were taken to Dresden and Moritzburg and auctioned off.
