NOZEMAN, Cornelius (1712-1786), Martinus HOUTTUYN (1720-1798) and Jan Christiaan SEPP (1739-1811)

Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huishouding, aert, en eigenschappen beschreeven. Amsterdam: Jan Christiaan Sepp [and son], 1770-1829.

A fine, uncut copy of 'the first comprehensive account of the avifauna of Holland' (Anker). This large iconography was a long-term project. Cornelius Nozeman, a pastor who owned a cabinet of natural-history specimens, was the first editor but died before the appearance of volume II in 1789. Dr. Martinus Houttuyn, his successor, in turn died shortly after the appearance of volume III in 1797. Christiaan Sepp, the principal artist and publisher of the enterprise, himself died long before the appearance of volume V, though his name still appears on the imprint. Considerable assistance with the final two volumes was lent by C. J. Temminck who owned many of the specimens featured. The detailed text includes notes on habitat, and the plates show each species in its natural surroundings, often with nest and eggs (8 of the plates are of the nest and eggs alone). This approach is prefigured in the frontispieces which memorably combine several species with their nests and suggestions of appropriate habitat. Landwehr gives a complete list of plates and notes that it was the most expensive book for sale in Holland at this period. Anker 369; Fine Bird Books (1990) p.129; Landwehr Studies in Dutch Books with Coloured Plates 145; Nissen IVB 684; cf. Wood p. 496; Zimmer p. 469.

5 volumes, large folio (537 x 365mm). Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece to each volume and 250 hand-coloured plates, including 2 double-page and several with folding flaps, by and after Christiaan Sepp and son, N. Muis in vols. I-II and W. Hendriks in vol. IV (occasional faint spotting, vol. III with tiny marginal tear to 3R2 and with plate of 'Alauda campestris' lightly browned). Contemporary half calf, uncut (spines rubbed and chipped). Sold with a 1940 publication about Nozeman's work reproducing 16 plates in colour.
