The painting of the Teatro delle Acque di Villa Torlonia belongs to the mature creative ohase of Oswald Achenbach, one of the most significant representatives of the italian landscape in German 19th century painting. in his numerous stays in Italy, the artist developed a visual language that combines intuitive observation of nature with an effective, almost theatrical mise-en-scène. Central to the composition is the architecture of the nymphaeum with its impressive fountain - brought to life by the delicately harmonised guidance of light. The surrounding vegetation is created with relaxed, dyamic brushwork and produces a harmonious balance of nature and architectural intervention. In comparison possible characters remain rather insignificant, foremost, they create the atmosphere, they enlive the scene.

As it is characteristics for Achenbach, the motif obviously wa very popular with the result that it was repeatedly painted in several versions. We know of at least one additional version of this painting that diverges from the present painting in composition and the lighting mood. This practice corresponds to the artist's style of working who successfully created images in multiple variations to test different moods, lighting conditions and new solutions in painting.

The work not only bears witness to Achenbach's lasting fascination with Italian landscapes but also his comprehension of painting as an on-going process of variations and refining. The Teatro delle Acque di Villa Torlonia thus proves, in this sense, as an impressive example for the combination of natural studies and artistic imagination that shape his work.
