[JUDAICA] - PAGNINI, Sante (1470-1541) - Epitome thesauri linguae sanctae. Kotser otsar lesho ha-kodesh. Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1588.

A popular and much reprinted Hebrew-Latin lexicon by the Domenican Sancte (Xantes) Pagnino printed by the humanist typographer Christophe Plantin. Epitome Thesauri Linguae Sanctae is a translation of and exposition on the Biblical glossary Sefer ha-shorashim (Book of Roots) by R. David Kimhi. Originally written as a Hebrew-Latin dictionary for Catholic ministers, it was composed during the early 16th-century by the Dominican Bible scholar St. Pagnini and published for the first time in 1529. Appended to the dictionary is a list of nominalization patterns and a list of irregular nouns. This lexicon had a great success and was frequently republished.

8vo (174 x 112mm). Hebrew and Roman type, text in Latin and Hebrew, woodcut printer's device on title, initials and headpieces (some browning, first gathering detched and a few other leaves just holding). Contemporary Oxford dark calf with a triple blind-ruled frame on each board and the distinctive cross hatching in the panels at head and tail (rubbed and with some general wear). Provenance: numerous contemporary annotations also in Hebrew to final blank and in the text - Thomas Gatacre (1533-1593; contemporary ownership inscription on title and annotations in the text. Member of the English Parliament and originally from a strongly Catholic family of Gatacre Hall, Shropshire).
