Trionfi. Commentary by Bernardo Lapini da Siena (c.1430-after 1474). Bologna: [Hannibal Malpiglius], 27 April 1475.
First edition of the commentary by Bernardo Lapini on the Trionfi of Petrarch: ‘by far the most important and influential of the early annotated editions’ (Carnicelli). Written over an extended period that continued until the poet's death, the poem had enormous popularity in the 15th century. ‘The Trionfi provided a wealth of inspiration for artists and craftsmen for well over three centuries [and] up to the middle of the 16th, they probably overshadowed the Canzoniere, the collection upon which the poet’s modern reputation rests’. It is presented in the form of a vision where allegorical figures, accompanied by appropriate characters from history, mythology and the Bible, succeed one another from the initial triumph of Love over the human heart until the final triumph of Eternity over Time. Median folio (344 x 227mm). 243 leaves (of 244, lacking final blank). Early (?16th-century) illuminated initial and 4-sided border on [a1r] coloured in purple, blue and green, incorporating circular vignettes of hares either side of armorial with 4 fleurs-de-lis and 2 crossed maces, coloured bas-de-page on [a2r] depicting haloed holy figure between peacocks, 13 contemporary northern Italian illuminated white vine initials coloured in red, blue and green, illuminated initial with uncoloured penwork decoration on [a1v] (tiny repairs to verso of [a1] in lower margin, a few tiny unobtrusive wormholes, a few leaves strengthened in gutter, the leaves featuring the 13 white vine initials with lower margins excised and replaced slightly affecting text in final quire, the final printed leaf with lower third excised and replaced affecting some text, occasional faint staining resulting in tiny loss at blank fore-edge in opening quires). 18th-century red morocco, sides with borders elaborately gilt, green morocco spine label and one compartment lettered in gilt, the others with gilt stars and floral motifs, (slightly rubbed, heavier at head of spine). Provenance: unidentified ?16th-century armorial on [a1r] – ‘CMF’ ink stamps on two leaves and all edges – 18th-century shelfmark in ink on endpaper – Baron Per Hierta, Främmestad (book collector, 1864-1924; inscription on endpaper).
