A collection of signed photographs of jazz, blues and swing musicians, 1920s-1970s, the majority vintage gelatin silver publicity portraits, comprising: Oran Thaddeus “Hot Lips” Page, c.1937, signed and inscribed to ‘king of all swing singers’ Jimmy Rushing; blues queen Sara Martin, c.1920s, signed and inscribed ‘To Marvin’ [faded]; Coleman Hawkins, c. 1938, signed and inscribed ‘To June with all best wishes’, together with a studio photograph in photofolder, inscribed ‘To my pal Nick – from Hawkins, April 1933’; violinist “Stuff” Smith, 1936, signed and dated ‘The Onyx, N.Y. ‘36’; Chick Webb and His Orchestra featuring Ella Fitzgerald, signed and inscribed ‘To Marie’ by Fitzgerald, together with a candid street photograph of Ella Fitzgerald, signed and inscribed ‘Thanks so much’; Jimmie Lunceford, 1935, signed by Lunceford and 15 members of his orchestra, together with a dramatic gelatin silver publicity portrait of Jimmie Lunceford’s brass section, c.1935, the image by Gordon Conner of Cleveland, Ohio, 253 x 201 mm, stamped photographer’s credit verso; Bunny Berigan, c.1940, signed and inscribed ‘Best wishes to Bert Dean’, the image by Bruno of Hollywood, together with a small photo postcard of Berrigan and his Orchestra, signed by Berrigan in white ink, and a typed letter signed from Berigan to a fan, 30 April 1938, thanking them for their encouraging comments and enclosing the autographed photo, with original envelope; Sister Rosetta Tharpe, c.1940; Wilbur “Buck” Clayton, c.1960; Sonny Rollins, 1970 [printed later], the candid image by jazz critic Randi Hultin; Roy Eldridge, 1930s; a promotional postcard of vaudevillian character “Stepin Fetchit” for the Zanzibar club, c.1950; and a promotional postcard of violinist Stéphane Grappelli, c.1945; the majority 8 x10 in. (203 x 254 mm) or smaller.

[With:] a collection of 14 black and white publicity portraits featuring Jack McVea and his Orchestra and Slim Gaillard, late 1940s, the images comprising: eight of Jack McVea and his Orchestra including the band posing in front of the tour bus (the door of which bears the legend Open the Door Richard) and individual portraits of McVea and his band members; two of Slim Gaillard and his band, heavily annotated on the reverse with daily accounts for the group (whisky and soda making a notable dent in the budget), with associated expense report; one of pianist/vocalist Leomine “Leona” Gray, with associated typed letter signed from agent Reginald D. Marshall promoting his client Leona, dated 7 June 1948, on agency headed stationery; two of vocalist Helen Carr, each with stamped credit of the Romaine Studio verso; and one of the Helen Hart Trio; with stamped credit of the Romaine Studio verso. 14 gelatin silver prints, variously stamped and annotated verso, in brown imitation leather post binder with brass screw, lettered in gilt on the front cover for the ‘Reginald D. Marshall Agency, Hollywood, California'.
