WAYNE, Anthony (1745-1796). Autograph letter signed ("Anty Wayne") to Col. Anthony Walton White, Camden, [South Carolina], 23 December 1781.

One page, bifolium, 195 x 155mm (light soiling at margin, tear at lower center, losses to transmittal leaf including seal tear and trimmed). Encapsulated.

"Mad Anthony" Wayne encourages White and his dragoons to accompany him southwards to Savannah, anticipating "a field of Glory will probably present a little lower down the Country of which I wish you to participate…" After the American victory at Yorktown in October 1781, Wayne was moved to the Southern Department under Major General Nathanael Greene; he would head farther south to disband the British alliance with Native American tribes in Georgia. At his urging here, White and his cavalry would accompany Wayne in Georgia in May 1782, where they besieged Savannah until the British evacuation of the city. After the capture of Savannah, both men and their forces would rejoin the main southern army in South Carolina until the close of the war. Provenance: Anthony Walton White — by descent to the consignor.
