PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES AND LATE NINTEENTH CENTURY POLITCS – A group of ten letters from several presidents and prominent U.S. politicians [including:] JOHNSON, Andrew (1808-1875). Partly-printed document signed ("Andrew Johnson") as President, Washington, 29 October 1868. One page, bifolium, folio (slight split at right edge, separated at centerfold and there reinforced with tape). Additionally signed by William H. SEWARD as Secretary of State. An appointment of J. Ross Browne as Minister to China. Browne was an Irish-born traveler and writer, whose brief experience aboard a whaling ship lead to his 1846 book Etchings of a Whaling Cruise - which is thought to have inspired Herman Melville. * GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885). Autograph endorsement signed ("U.S. Grant") as Lieutenant General, Washington, 1 March 1866. Additionally endorsed by William T. SHERMAN and Robert B. MITCHELL. Accomplished on the verso of a letter of commendation by Joseph J. Reynolds, supporting Brevet Brigadier General James M. Williams' appointment in the regular Army after being mustered out of volunteer service, Little Rock, 2 December 1865 (a few light stains, slight separation to fold edges). Williams helped to organize, and was initial commander, of the first unit of African American soldiers to see combat, the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry. Reynolds's endorsement of Williams notably mentions "...the collisions etc that have frequently occurred between colored troops & others & between them and citizens have been avoided...due to the discipline enforced by Genl Williams". Sherman, in his endorsement, mentions "no personal connection" with Williams, though recommends him for the position "on the faith of Gen. Reynolds". Grant, in his endorsement, concurs for his appointment "as Colonel or Lieutenant Colonel of a Colored Regiment". * HAYES, Rutherford B. (1822-1893). Autograph letter signed ("R. B. Hayes") as Governor to Richard Moore Bishop, Theodore Cook, and Miles Greenwood, Columbus, 15 March 1869. One page, quarto. A request that the pamphlet of William Lewis Maury regarding the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad be circulated among the citizens of Ohio. * GARFIELD, James A. (1831 - 1881). Autograph letter signed ("Jas. Garfield") to Thomas Wharton Phillips, Hiram, 15 October 1871. One page, octavo. A friendly note regarding his desire to visit, stating "...I do not yet abandon the hope of doing so before the next session of Congress begins - but I have been closely engaged in the political campaign for the last two months..." * ARTHUR, Chester A. (1822 - 1893). Partly-printed document signed ("Chester A. Arthur") as President, Washington, 2 March 1885. One page, quarto. A directive for the Secretary of State to affix the U.S. seal to the pardon of William B. Moran. * ARTHUR, Chester A. Autograph letter signed ("C. A. Arthur") as Quartermaster General to Assistant Inspector General, Colonel S. W. Bart, New York, 16 July 1862. Two pages, quarto. Regarding the account of a Mr. Isaac Wood for supplies furnished to the 56th Regiment Volunteers. * CLEVELAND, Grover (1837-1908). Autograph letter signed ("Grover Cleveland") to Donald M. Dickinson, [New York], 31 October 1892. Two pages, quarto. A slightly irritated message resisting an additional speech, shortly after his re-nomination for the presidency by the Democratic National Committee. * HARRISON, Benjamin (1833-1901). Typed letter signed ("Benj. Harrison") as President to the Senate and House of Representatives, Washington, 14 February 1893. One page, oblong quarto (trimmed at top margin). Forwarding a report of the Commissioner of Labor "relating to compulsory insurance of workingmen in Germany and other countries". * HARRISON, Benjamin. Autograph letter signed ("Benj. Harrison") to William H. Robertson, Indianapolis, 27 May 1887. Two pages, octavo, on his law office letterhead (a few small tears, two separations at top and bottom edges, left edge reinforced on the verso). A request for W.H.H. Lucker(?) to be made a Watchman of a local Customs House, mentioning his " letter from my Grandfather (President Harrison) [sic] to his father...if he gives you evidence of his personal fitness I would be much obliged if you could give him a place. The letter from Genl Harrison which he will show you will explain to you the value I take in his case". * BRYAN, William Jennings (1860-1925). Autograph letter signed ("W. J.
