A most excellent and compendious method of curing woundes in the head, and in other parts of the body... London: Thomas East for Thomas Cadman, 1588.
Very rare compilation of medical writings for surgeons in Elizabethan London, preserved in a contemporary English binding and containing one of the earliest appearances of the Hippocratic Oath in English: only the Haskell F. Norman copy (Christie’s New York, 1998) has appeared at auction since the 1970s.
John Read, the editor of this compilation, was concerned with improving the practice of surgery in Elizabethan England and setting it free from ‘the abuses of quackery’. The opening work is the first English translation of De recta curandorum vulnerum ratione by the Spanish surgeon Francisco Arceo, a treatise on the art of surgery which drew upon Byzantine and Islamic influences. This is supplemented by the first edition in English of a treatise on fistulae by John Arderne (1307-1392) which had circulated in manuscript in England since the fourteenth century, and by a passage translated from the fourth book of Galen's De compositione medicamentorum per genera.
The Hippocratic Oath, found here in English on Kk2v-3r, was first mentioned by medical writers of the first and second centuries A.D., including Erotian, Scribonius Largus, and Soranus of Ephesus. In the Latin translation the Oath was first published in the second edition of Articella (Venice: Hermannus Liechtenstein, 29 March 1483), a collection of medical texts associated with the School of Salerno. The Greek text was first printed in Froben's 1518 Basel edition of the Planudean Aesop and was included in the editio princeps of the Hippocratic corpus, printed by the heirs of Aldus Manutius in 1526. In the English translation, a short excerpt appeared in John Securis’s A detection and querimonie (1566), before what is believed to be the first full English translation was published in Thomas Newton’s The olde mans dietarie in 1586, just two years before the present work was issued. STC 723; Wellcome 371; Norman 60; cf. Robert M. Veatch, Hippocratic, Religious, and Secular Medical Ethics: The Points of Conflict (2012).
Quarto (190 x 143mm). Black letter and roman types. Typographic title-page border and tail-pieces, one woodcut illustration, ornamental woodcut initials (occasional dampstaining, heaviest in first few quires, small portion of title and upper gutter of two text leaves with neat reinforcement, minor chip to upper corner of title just into typographic border, tiny hole touching title border and one word on A2, A2v-A3r lightly soiled). Contemporary limp vellum, later manuscript lettering on spine, faint and indeterminate stamps on covers, evidence of stab-stitching in inner margin (somewhat soiled, some loss of vellum at upper outer corners and fore-edge of lower cover, upper corners of endpapers with neat reinforcement). Provenance: early underlining and a basic marginal manicule on 2F2 – a few later pen trials on endpapers – Royal Society of Medicine (ink stamps on title [Medical and Chirurgical Society] and final leaf [Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society], shelf-labels to upper cover and upper pastedown).
