$ 15 000 – 25 000
First edition of the Ninth Relation, containing the first report of Jean de Niccollet's 1634 expedition. Barthélemy Vimont was named Supérieur of the Jesuits at Québec in 1639 and was responsible for the Relations until 1645, which explains the appearance of his name on the title-page. However, the actual author is Le Jeune, who continued to write and sign the reports until 1642. This is McCoy's variant 2. It contains the first report of Jean de Nicollet's expedition to broker a peace treaty between the Winnebago, Huron, and Ottawa (while looking for the Northwest Passage). Although the passage remained elusive, he founded a small trading post in what is now called Green Bay that would become an important center of the French fur trade.
Le Jeune also further discusses the First Nations people inhabiting maritime Canada and the Mississippi Valley, as well as a smallpox epidemic and the activities of the recently arrived nuns. He describes a play performed in honor of the birth of the Dauphin that featured a Hellmouth peopled by Algonquin-speaking demons. Lalemant's report in the second part documents growing unrest at the Huron mission due to the Hurons' anger at the French colonists for the smallpox epidemic. McCoy 39; Sabin 99748.
Two parts in one, octavo (165 x 109mm). Woodcut device on title. Contemporary limp vellum, title in ink on spine (a few chips, front flyleaf coming detached textblock separating slightly from wrapper).
