a superb, very early impression of this highly important print
the extremely rare first state (of five)
printing very richly and evenly
with rich burr throughout and a selectively wiped plate tone
the vellum support lending a warm tone and painterly, atmospheric effects to the image
with small margins on three sides and partially at the top
lacking substantial parts of the sky at upper right and left
Sheet 386 (maximum height) x 451 mm.

Provenance

With Arthur Pond (circa 1705-1758), London (without mark; see Lugt 2038).
Sir Edward Astley (1729-1802), Norfolk (Lugt 2775, recto); probably acquired en-bloc from the above with the rest of his collection; presumably in his sale, Langford, London, 27 March 1760 (and following days).
Sotheby’s, London, 11 July 1968, lot 59 (erroneously described as second state).
Sam Josefowitz (Lugt 6094); acquired at the above sale (through Gale); then by descent to the present owners.
