on smooth, golden Japan paper
a superb impression of this highly important print
second state (of four)
printing richly and darkly, with astonishing clarity and definition
the rich burr and a selectively wiped plate tone creating brilliant, luminous effects and intense contrasts
the light and shaded parts of the composition finely balanced
with wide margins and a sharp platemark
in very good condition

Adam Gottlieb Thiermann (d. 1859), Berlin (Lugt 2434); his Rembrandt collection sold by his widow en-bloc to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in 1861.
Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett (Lugt 1633), acquired from the above; with their de-accession stamp (Lugt 5998); their duplicate sale, R. Lepke, Berlin, 30 October 1871 (and following days), lot 1213 ('... in vorzüglichem II. Abdruck auf japanesischem Papier, mit Rändchen') (to Lepke).
