An exquisite jewel-bound illuminated manuscript by Sangorksi & Sutcliffe commissioned by Gannon and Cassidy of New York, and acquired by the collector Phoebe Boyle of Brooklyn who was described by George Sutcliffe as ‘rivalling the Medici in her patronage of the production of beautiful books’ (Shepherd, The Cinderella of the Arts, p. 63). Boyle owned 45 jewelled Sangorski and Sutcliffe bindings, of which 31 were illuminated manuscripts by Alberto Sangorksi, Francis’s brother. Boyle’s library was sold at Anderson Galleries, 19-20 November, 1923 (‘The Magnificent Library of the late Mrs Phoebe A.D. Boyle of Brookly, N.Y. consisting of ancient and modern manuscripts on vellum; books of hours, sumptuous jewelled bindings and other exquisite bindings [etc.]’).

Illuminated manuscript on vellum, quarto (260 x 150mm), 17 leaves (including colophon), [2], 30 (i.e. 29 pp., page number 12 omitted in error), [3] pp., in black and red ink, single column, 26 lines to a full page, title and first page of text with illuminated borders in gold and colours, 5 miniatures, 18 illuminated initials in gold and colours, 7 large and 11 smaller, some of the smaller initials with extensions, final leaf with colophon on recto, contemporary burgundy crushed levant morocco binding by Sangorksi and Sutcliffe, upper cover decorated with the arms of the Earl of Surrey in a large central oval within a band of inlaid green morocco gilt, set with 12 marquise garnets and 12 turquoises, the arms and crest in red, silver, black, tan and green morocco onlays, all gilt, with coronet in gilt, surrounded by a gilt intertwined motif of the English rose and the Scotch thistle, the leaves picked out with green inlays, having at the top corners shields with the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew and at the lower corners the arms of Scotland and of England, in red, silver, blue, gold and green, gilt, all within an inlaid band of green morocco with two gilt fillets, the lower cover with the same intertwined motif with the monograms of Henry VIII of England and James V of Scotland, with at centre a large inlaid device of three crossed swords and the mottoes of England and Scotland in red, green, silver and gold, spine in six compartments (2 lettered) with raised bands gilt, broad turn-ins with gilt fillets and whorled corners with small inlaid green morocco dots, doublures of green crushed levant morocco with foliate and floral corner-pieces and gilt arms (England and Scotland) at centre, green China silk liners, gilt edges, in silk and velvet-lined folding box (box damaged).
