SQUIRE, Alexander Balmanno (1836-1908)
Photographs (Colored from Life) of the Diseases of the Skin [- Second Series]. London: John Churchill and Sons, 1865-[1866].
First edition of the first and second series of the earliest published photographs of skin diseases, containing Alexander Balmanno Squire’s pioneering hand-coloured clinical photographs. Squire was a pupil of William Jenner, to whom the work is dedicated, and was surgeon to the West London Dispensary for disease of the skin and a lecturer at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School. In the introduction Squire states: ‘The great difficulty hitherto experienced in producing illustrations adequately pourtraying the various diseases of the skin, induced me to try if greater accuracy and more life-like representation might not be obtained by means of photographs of the disease coloured from life by one of the best artists. My original object in making the experiment was to assist myself in researches into the pathology and treatment of the diseases of the skin. I was thus enabled, by securing accurate representations of remarkable cases, to compare them with other similar cases that subsequently came under my care. It soon became evident that excellent results were to be obtained by this means, and that they might be rendered more widely available by publication’. A third series containing a further 6 photographs was published later in 1866. Gernsheim, Incunabula of British Photographic Literature, 280 (with 'Balmano' spelling).

2 parts in one volume, plus a supplementary published photograph, quarto (265 x 204mm). First series with letterpress title and dedication leaf. Second series with original printed brown upper wrapper (as title). 19 hand-coloured albumen prints on printed card mounts, comprising 12 photographs in the first series, 6 in the second series, and a separately published photograph of ‘The Skin-Eruption of the Cattle-Plague’ (published February 1st 1866 and advertised separately in the Lancet) on a printed card mount stating ‘Second Series’ and numbered in manuscript ink ‘VII’, each photograph with an accompanying leaf of descriptive letterpress. Modern brown library buckrum, flat spine titled in gilt. Provenance: Royal Society of Medicine (circular library inkstamps [‘Royal Society of Medicine 22 Nov 1979’] to upper pastedown and title, and [‘Royal Medical & Chirurgical Society’] to title, verso of plates and wrapper).
