Pocket watch: historically interesting John Arnold chronometer No. 20/1020, London 1797/1810
Ca. Ø55mm, ca. 155g, typical Arnold silver case, hinged to both sides, London Hallmarks 1810, inside gilt, beautiful, original John Arnold & Son movement, pierced cock, diamond endstone, helical hairspring, Arnold's detent chronometer escapement, plate signed John Arnold & Son London No. 20/1020 invenit et fecit, enamel dial, gold hands, very good condition, in working order. Provenance: Sotheby's 1977, listed and described here in Hans Staeger: "100 Jahre Präzisionsuhren von John Arnold bis Arnold & Frodsham, 1763-1862". Since the movement is dated 1797, it can be assumed that the watch was already modernised by Arnold in 1810. J.R. Arnold obviously decided to keep the original spring detent chronometer escapement, but the movement was equipped with the new Pennington balance, in this case in a particularly heavy and high-quality version. A very interesting pocket chronometer, in which the evolution of the modernisations by Arnold's son, John Roger Arnold, can be well seen. As far as we know today, only 6 of these Arnold chronometers of the so-called III series are known.
