THE BROWNLOW TUREENS: A PAIR OF GEORGE III SILVER SOUP TUREENS, COVERS, LINERS AND STANDS
MARK OF RICHARD COOKE, LONDON, 1810, SUPPLIED BY VULLIAMY AND SON
The tureens bombé oval with lobed lower bodies, on four acanthus scroll feet headed by acanthus extending into bifurcated naturalistic foliage handles, applied on both sides with a coat-of-arms with baron's coronet above and below ribbon-tied laurel swags, the lobed domed covers with similar swags, surmounted by vegetable and crustacean finials, with removable liners with ring handles, the stands shaped oval with rocaille borders and openwork shell handles, marked throughout, the applied arms apparently unmarked
21 5/8 in. (55 cm.) long, the stands
1,109 oz. 8 dwt. (34,502 gr.)
The arms are those of Cust quartering Brownlow impaling Hume quartering Pepdie, for John Cust, 2nd Baron, later 1st Earl Brownlow (1779-1853), and his first wife Sophia (1788-1814), second daughter and co-heir of Sir Abraham Hume, Bt., whom he married in 1810.




Provenance

Probably originally ordered by Eric Mackay (1773-1847), 8th Lord Reay, in 1810.
Sold by the Vulliamys to John Cust, 2nd Baron, later 1st Earl Brownlow (1779-1853) and his first wife Sophia Hume (1788-1814), then by decent to his grandson,
John Egerton-Cust, 2nd Earl Brownlow (1842-1867), then to his brother,
Adelbert Brownlow-Cust, 3rd Earl Brownlow (1844-1921), then to his second cousin,
Adelbert Cust, 5th Baron Brownlow (1867-1927), then to his son,
Peregrine Cust, 6th Baron Brownlow (1899-1978), sold,
Christie's, London, 13 March 1929, lot 41.
William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951) .
With S.J. Phillips, London.
Acquired from the above by Claus von Bülow (1926-2019) and Sunny von Bülow (1931-2008), 21 August 1964, then to her mother and step-father,
Annie Laurie Aitken (1900-1984) and Russell Barnett Aitken (1910-2002).
