The Life of George Morland

Cosway binding with 33 miniatures

DAWE, George. The Life of George Morland. Introduction and notes by J. J. Foster. London: Dickinsons, 1904.

Sumptuous Cosway binding on a limited edition biography of the painter, George Morland. No. 2 of 175 copies, signed by the editor on the limitation page. The original manuscript binders’ key sheet for the portraits is preserved. George Morland’s rustic scenes, childhood idylls, and scenes of family and romantic love are particularly well-suited to the Cosway style and are very sympathetically selected, painted and arranged, almost certainly by Miss C.B. Currie. This is an exquisite example of Cosway binding in superb condition.

Quarto (347 x 268mm). Half-title. Title-page printed in red and black (mostly erased ownership stamp of Emilie S. Coles). Illustrated with 56 photogravure plates, a few present in both color and monotone states. Full crimson crushed levant morocco by Rivière & Son, the upper cover with 33 glazed miniature paintings on ivory, comprising four circular paintings of narrative scenes as corner-pieces, an oval scene at the center, “Stable Door,” and 28 smaller circular portraits of ladies in three sizes, many of which are details after the Morland originals; the center miniature is in a double gilt rule frame, the others framed with single gilt rules, the whole cover richly gilt with two oval rings with radiating gilt rules, the ovals surrounded by gilt dots and leaves, the lower cover with a border of five gilt rules, spine gilt in seven compartments with raised bands, double gilt rule on board edges, turn-ins with four gilt rules and corner designs, dark green moiré silk endleaves, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, stamp-signed by the binders on the upper turn-in. Fleece-lined morocco pull-off case. Provenance: Emilie S. Coles, 1845-1919 (small inkstamp).
