Einstein thanks Jacobson, a Swedish born chef and artist, who had apparently sent him a sketch portrait of the physicist. In the 1920s, Jacobson had secured a reputation for painting mgazine covers for publications in the United States and Europe while earning a reputation for his culinary skills. After serving as head chef in the U.S. Senate and for General Kuhn of the 79th Division during the First World War, he worked for numerous top New York hotels, including the Waldorf Astoria. Einstein found Jacobson's sketch "impressive and convincing," but adds that Jacobson's note indicated that he "was suffering" — possibly a reference that to a leg injury that the chef had suffered during his service as a cook during the First World War.
