Oscar Heyman & Brothers designed their first pansy brooch in the 1930’s, and it quickly became an iconic jewelry staple for the brand. The brothers Oscar and Nathan Heyman immigrated to the United states from Latvia in 1906, and thanks to an apprenticeship at their great-uncle's Fabergé workshop the pair has a strong background in jewelry. The firms renowned craftsmanship, technical skill and use of high-quality gemstones attracted some of the most prestigious jewelry houses as clients including Cartier, Black, Starr and Frost, Marcus & Co., Tifany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels. Although without their own display space at the 1939 World’s Fair, Oscar Heyman & Bros. was represented by four of the five retailers in the jewelry pavilion and won gold medals for a collection of pansy, orchid and gardenia brooches. Floral brooches became a mainstay of the firm and in the mid-1980s, the pansy broch was produced exclusively for Tiffany & Co. This iconic flower has been crafted in a wide variety of beautifully cut and incredibly set gemstones including sapphires, rubies, amethysts, citrines and diamonds.
