Illumination: This charming Book of Hours was illuminated by a skilled artist in the workshop of the Master of the Rouen Echevinage, whose style dominated Rouennais book production in the third quarter of the 15th century. The Master is known for his richly patterned fabrics, complex combinations of architecture and landscape, and embellishment of narrative with additional details. All these features are evident in the present lot. The luminous palette makes use of gold both for highlighting and for representing gold in textiles and metalwork; the contrasting qualities of liquid and burnished gold are exploited in miniatures and borders. The Master of the Rouen Echevinage, sometimes known as the Master of Geneva Latini, is named after the sumptuous secular manuscripts that he illustrated for the town council of Rouen from the late 1450s to 1480s (see F. Avril and N. Reynaud, Les manuscrits à peintures en France, 1440-1520, 1993, pp. 169-172). The Master’s iconographic and stylistic sources lie in Parisian illumination of the first half of the 15th century, derived from the work of the Master of the Munich Golden Legend who was briefly active in Rouen.

The subjects of the full-page miniatures are as follow: Annunciation f.13, Nativity f.40, Flight into Egypt f.61, David in Prayer f.70; Crucifixion f.94, Pentecost f.100.
