Ten Deeds and Documents, in Latin, manuscripts on vellum [England, Yorkshire, 13th to 15th centuries]
A group of Yorkshire deeds, indentures and quitclaims spanning from the 13th to the 15th centuries

Comprising:
(i) Quitclaim of Jordan son of Anabill of ‘Bovelington’ to Joanna de Heck of land at ‘Povelington’ in ‘Weytecroft’ [England, Yorkshire, 13th century]
c.115 × 155mm. 14 lines. With seal-tag but no seal. ‘Bovelington’ and ‘Povelington’ are presumably variant spellings for Pollington, Yorkshire, about 3 miles or 5km from Snaith.
Provenance: Colker MS 83; acquired in 1965 from Maggs.

(ii) The lower part of a deed of John concerning land between a ditch and the land of St John de Mora, held by William. England; dated at Cowick (adjacent to Snaith, Yorkshire), 4 May 1320
c.50 × 240mm. 6 lines.
Provenance: Colker MS 82; acquired in 1965 from Winifred Myers, London dealer in autographs and manuscripts.

(iii) Deed of Alexander, son of Reginald de Fisselack (Fishlake?), to John son of Matilda of Snaith, a strip of land (‘selionem terre’) which lies in the west field of Snaith, between the land of Thomas Fisse and William son of John of Conwyck. England; dated at Snaith (Yorkshire), 11 January ‘Anno R.R. E. fil. R. E. xv’ [i.e. 1322]
c.90 × 230mm. 11 lines of cursive documentary script, with seal-tag and green wax seal depicting a pelican and nest with three chicks, endorsed ‘Rachinaldus de Fisselake’ (creased, stained, and defective at the bottom edge, with the loss of a few words.
Provenance: Colker MS 150; acquired in 1969 from Quaritch.

(iv) The lower part of a deed to a woman named Catherine. England; dated at Snaith (Yorkshire), on the Sunday before the feast of St Lucy [i.e. 12 December] 1344
c.45 × 270 mm. 7 lines. With a slit for a seal-tag.
Provenance: Colker MS 105; acquired in 1966 from Winifred Myers.

(v) Deed of John de Horford of Topcliffe to his wife Margaret and son John of all lands and properties in Thirsk, Catton on the Swale, Dalton, Topcliffe, Cundall, etc., with a testamentary wish that two wax candles should be lit at Topcliffe church, one before the great Cross and the other in the chapel of St Thomas before the image of St Mary. England; dated at Topcliffe (Yorkshire), on Thursday, the feast of St Richard [i.e. 6 December] 1347
c.155 × 295mm. 14 lines in cursive documentary script, endorsed ‘pertinet ecclesie de Topcliffe’ and ‘all my landes & tenement in Dalltun & Catton’. With a small wax seal mostly enclosed in the seal-tag.
Provenance: Colker MS 183, acquired in 1971 from Quaritch.

(vi) Letter of Attorney of John de Goldale to Thomas son of John de Goldale. England; dated at ‘Ffrisemerske’ (i.e. Frismarsh, Sunk Island, Yorkshire) on the feast of St Michael 1360
c.75 × 240 mm. 7 lines.
Provenance: Colker MS 140; acquired in 1968 from Winifred Myers.

(vii) Indenture of William son of Robert of Enwick to Reginald of Fishlake, giving a strip of land in the west field of Snaith between the land of Thomas Fisse and Hugh son of Lambert, and two other pieces of land [England, Yorkshire (probably Snaith), 14th century]
c.130 × 170mm. 19 lines, endorsed ‘Carta magna Reginal’.
Provenance: Colker MS 63; acquired in 1964 from Quaritch.

(viii) Deed of Henry, son of Richard de Egburghe, giving land to Laurence de Hek(?). [England, probably the West Riding of Yorkshire, 14th century]
c.85 × 216 mm. 11 lines. Seal-tag but no seal. Creased and stained, rendering some parts hard to read. The text mentions Armthorpe (near Doncaster).
Provenance: Colker MS 139; acquired in 1968 from Winifred Myers.

(ix) Deed of Thomas Storom’ de Grysthwat to William son of Walter Clarke de Topclyff, of three acres of arable land in Dalton which are held by William ‘Ka’ (i.e. Kaye?) de Grysthwat, with five named witnesses including William Ka. England; dated at Topcliffe (Yorkshire), on St Oswald’s day, 1413.
c.80 × 215 mm. 11 lines. Endorsed ‘Dalton’. Creased and water-stained.
Gristhwaite is less than 2 miles or 3km north of Topcliffe; Dalton is about 1 mile east of each of them.
Provenance: Colker MS 123, acquired in 1967 from Winifred Myers.

(x) Quitclaim of William Shoter that his brother John Shoter, son of Richard Shoter, concedes to Robert, son of Stephen Coplay, all his lands, properties, and livestock in Rowley. England, dated at Rowley (Yorkshire), 11 January [1463]
c.110 × 265mm. 15 lines. With seal-tag and black wax seal.
