Лот 54 | „Zufluchtsbaum“ der Gelug-pa Tradition, mit Tsongkhapa
"Refuge tree" of the Gelug-pa tradition, with Tsongkhapa - Tibet, 19th c. - This thangka shows the immeasurably precious wishing tree that emerged from the primordial ocean, abundantly adorned with fruits that here embody the figures of Buddhas and many kinds of tantric deities. In the top of the tree is enthroned Tsongkhapa, as "Root Lama", the founder of Gelug-pa school (1357-1419). In his left hand he holds an alms bowl and his right hand shows the mudra of teaching. Two lotus flowers entwine above his shoulders. Above the lotus of his right shoulder appears the sword of knowledge as a symbol of his wisdom, above the lotus of his left shoulder appears the book of Mahayana wisdom (Prajnaparamita), as a sign of his erudition. In his heart is enthroned Buddha Shakyamuni, the yellow-colored historical Buddha. In the heart of Shakyamuni appears the blue-colored Buddha Vajradhara emblematic of the Dharmakaya, the unborn, uncreated and unchangeable body of the reality that can no longer be represented. On the right and left side of Tsongkhapa are two groups of lamas and scholars, each surrounding a bodhisattva. These are the respective lineage holders of two different ways of approaching the goal of enlightenment. On the right side are the representatives of the Yogacara school. Asanga, who received this teaching directly from the Bodhisattva Maitreya, is probably the most prominent representative of this school. On the left side there are the lineage holders of the Madhyamika school. The representative of this lineage is the Indian Pandita Nagarjuna (ca. 2nd century), who received the transmission of this lineage from the Bodhisattva Manjugosha. In front of the Lama is his direct lineage, i.e. the teacher of the meditator's root lama who embodies the immediate lineage of the doctrinal transmission. Above the lama are the representatives of the tantric initiation. These lamas and siddhas represent the tradition of secret and supreme knowledge, often transmitted only orally, to the disciple. Under Tsongkhapa, arranged in a ring, are ten classes of Buddhas and lamaistic deities, symbolizing the different degrees of knowledge transmitted in Vajrayana Buddhism. To all these highly energetic phenomena, the meditator, who offers a rice offering mandala in the lower right corner, and numerous offerings on an altar, takes refuge. Taking refuge is the basic practice in Buddhism. It is performed before every meditation and ritual. In order to escape the endless sufferings to which man is subjected according to Buddhist teachings through countless rebirths, one needs a foundation on which one can firmly rely in every situation. This foundation is the Buddha, his teachings and the "community of those on the path to enlightenment", which are called the three refuges. On this thangka, the "root lama" represents the Buddha's place, the yidam represents the Buddha's teaching, and the other protectors and spiritual attendants gathered on the thangka represent the community. With three prostrations, during which ritual prayer formulas are spoken and the "Chogs-zin " is visualized, the meditator takes upon himself the vow to strive for enlightenment for the benefit of all living beings, relying on the three refuges. Tempera and gold on cotton fabric, very beautiful original brocade border with numerous representations of phoenix birds, and floral decoration. - From an old German private collection, acquired before 2007 Traces of age, minor wear, framed under glass
