EARLY PENNSYLVANIA - THE PENINGTON FAMILY – PENN, William (1644-1718). Manuscript document signed ("Wm. Penn"), Philadelphia, [22 November] 1700.

One page on vellum, 226 x 232mm (loss at left margin not affecting text, mild soiling). Additionally signed by his second wife, Hannah Callowhill PENN (1671-1726), his daughter Letitia PENN (1678-1746). Additionally endorsed in 1749 by John KINSEY (1693-1750).

A rare birth certificate signed by both William and Hannah Penn documenting the birth of Isaac Penington, a new member of his extended family. Isaac Penington was the son of Edward and Sarah Penington, the former being the half-brother of William Penn's first wife, Gulielma Springett. William Penn, together with his daughter Letitia, Margaret Jones (likely his mother-in-law), Susanna Fox, and Ann Hasketh, all sign on the left hand column which is headed "Present at the naming though not at the birth of the Child." Opposite these signatures are those presumed to have attended the birth, most notably Ann Parsons (the midwife, who also delivered John Penn), Hannah Penn, Elizabeth Fox, Susanna Harwood, Mary Emily Jennings (likely the sister of Sarah Jennings Penington), and Joanna Kelson. Isaac Penington, the subject of this document, served as a justice of the Bucks County Court from 1725 until his death in 1742. Isaac also served as a sheriff of the county in the 1730s and was a significant landholder in Bucks County (Frank Willing Leach, "Old Philadelphia Families," North American. Philadelphia, 26 April 1908.)

[With:] An archive relative to the life of the subject of the above document [including:] PENINGTON, Isaac (1700-1742). Manuscript document signed, Northampton, Pennsylania, 7 October 1725. One page, vellum. The marriage certificate signed by Penington and his bride Ann Biles ("Ann Penington.") together with 52 other signatures of the witnesses including John Kinsey (1693-1750) who authored the 1732 Laws of New Jersey. * John KINSEY (1693-1750). Document signed, Philadelphia, 1 July 1749. Certifying "several affirmations" of James Logan, Thomas Jenney, and Mary Holcombe. Those three "affirmations" are present in this archive [including:] Thomas JENNEY. Document signed, Philadelphia, 3 May 1749. One page, bifolium. Attesting to the marriage of Isaac and Ann Penington. On the second leaf of the same bifolium is a similar document signed by James LOGAN (1674-1751), 30 June 1749 and countersigned by John KINSEY. The final leaf of the same bifolium is a similar document signed by Mary Holcombe who also attests to the same subject. * Sarah GROWDON. Document signed, Bucks County, 1749. Affirming the marriage of Isaac Penington to Ann Biles in relation to probating his estate. Provenance: Sir Thomas Phillipps (1801-1867). [Also with:] Juliana Fermor PENN (1729-1801). Signature and address panel addressed in the hand of Thomas Penn's wife. Provenance: The American Autograph Shop, Philadelphia.
