BY JOSEPH BAUMHAUER, THE MOUNTS BY PHILIPPE CAFFIERI, THE DESIGN BY LOUIS-JOSEPH DE LORRAIN, CIRCA 1758-1764, SUBSEQUENTLY RESTORED BY JEAN-FRANCOIS LELEU

The rectangular top of breakfront outline fitted with inset mottled marble flanked by ebony panels, surrounded by an ormolu border above a paneled frieze drawer fitted with a leaf-cast ormolu mount above a frieze fitted with ormolu Vitruvian scrolls and four glazed cupboard doors flanked and separated by ormolu-inset fluted pilasters surmounted by rosettes, above a shaped apron and block feet, stamped (once) 'JOSEPH,' and (twice) 'J.F. LELEU,' and (once) 'JME'; the back with printed label 'Chenue-Emballeur/Seligmann 5 Rue de la Terrasse, Paris,' with circular white sticker under marble with pencil '4068', with printed and inscribed Ann and Gordon Getty Collection inventory label

Provenance

Supplied as part of a larger ensemble to Ange-Laurent Lalive de Jully, probably circa 1762-4 for the cabinet flamand of his hôtel in the rue de Ménars where it is recorded in 1764.

Offered in the sale of his collection, 5 March 1770, lot 288 (withdrawn).

Acquired with the hôtel in the rue de Ménars by the Maréchal de Choiseul-Stainville and probably reconstructed circa 1785 for his new hôtel in the rue d'Artois, where it remained until the sale of 23 November 1789, lot 78, as one of four 'bas d'armoires'.

With Seligmann, Paris.

Sir Philip Sassoon, Bt., 25 Park Lane, London, recorded in the library in the pre-1927 inventory and in 1939.

Thence by descent to his sister Sybil , Marchioness of Cholmondeley.

Thence by descent to the Marquess of Cholmondeley, Houghton Hall, Norfolk, sold Works of Art from Houghton Hall; Christie's, London, 8 December 1994, lot 80.
