A frozen moment of pure energy: Franz von Stuck's iconic "Amazon" presents herself as feminine, defiant and full of energy. The proud rider with the lance in her hand looks straight ahead, her goal clearly in sight. The horse beneath her is in controlled motion, pausing in a tense movement before she fires the arrow at the unknown target.

Women held a special fascination for Franz von Stuck and play a central role in his work. He depicts female figures in numerous works, including the Amazon from Greek mythology. She comes from the legendary tribe of warrior women who went into battle in ancient times armed with bows and arrows. Stuck's depiction of the Amazon shows the clear influence of ancient art, but the artist interprets the figure in his own unique way: he combines her combative power with an intense erotic charisma - a characteristic feature of many of his depictions of women. In his interpretation, the Amazon embodies at the same time Eros, defensiveness, beauty and intellectual sovereignty.
Franz von Stuck, a central figure in the Munich art scene around 1900, created a work with this bronze that symbolises the transition from historicism to Art Nouveau. Wearing the helmet of Athena, goddess of wisdom and patron saint of the arts, the Amazon is not only a warrior from mythical times, but also an allegory of art itself. The richly decorated helmet refers to the bust of Athena in Munich's Glyptothek, whose likeness Stuck had already introduced as an iconic symbol of Munich as a city of art.
Formally, the sculpture captivates with its balanced interplay of smooth surfaces and finely crafted details such as the muscular play of the body, the precisely chiselled hair and the ornamentally designed helmet. First cast in 1897, the 'Amazon' quickly became one of Franz von Stuck's most famous works. Due to its great success, the work was cast in several editions by Cosmas Leyrer in Munich during Stuck's lifetime. Its timeless grace fascinates collectors today as it did then.
Since 1936, the monumental work has flanked the portico of Stuck's villa in Bogenhausen, a total work of art combining architecture, sculpture and painting. There, as here, it becomes clear that the Amazon is not a relic of the past but an early statement of modernism that recognises potential rather than regression in mythology. The work is impressive not only for its formal mastery but also embodies a clear stance on art as a visionary force.
