A TERRACOTTA GROUP REPRESENTING UGOLINO AND HIS CHILDREN, JEAN-BAPTISTE CARPEAUX (1827-1875)
After winning the Prix de Rome in 1854, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux became a resident at the Villa Medici. His romantic style, breaking with academic expectations, is reflected in his famous Ugolino. As well as preferring a modern literary theme to the usual subjects of ancient history, he designed a complex composition with many characters. His sculpture is inspired by Canto XXXIII from Dante's Divine Comedy, in which the author and Virgil meets Ugolino della Gherardesca in the Underworld. Known as the Tyrant of Pisa, he was imprisoned with his sons and grandsons for treason. He ends up starving to death after devouring his own family. Conducive to reflections on the definition and representation of tortured psychology, a theme dear to the Romantics, the figure of Ugolino was very popular with artists of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux's generation, such as Delacroix, Doré and Lobbedez.
For five years, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux made a large number of sketches before delivering a definitive version of his composition in 1861. Our terracotta is derived from the sketch known as 'Villa Medici' Ugolino's first project, which features only four figures (Valenciennes, Musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. S.92.8). Produced in terracotta, plaster, and bronze, this intermediate stage of Carpeaux's creative process met with remarkable success.
