JOHN FREDERICK HERRING SR. (1795-1865), DON ANTONIO WITH HIS OWNER MR FERGUSON, HIS TRAINER AND A STABLE HAND, OIL ON CANVAS, INSCRIBED, SIGNED AND DATED

John Frederick Herring Senior (1795-1865) was, with John Ferneley (1782-1860), the greatest English painter of sporting art – depictions of animals and hunting scenes – in the early nineteenth century. This was a genre whose reputation had been greatly enhanced by George Stubbs (1724-1806) in the mid-eighteenth century, who with his intelligent, empathetic approach and perfect knowledge of horse anatomy succeeded in elevating mere representations of animals to genuine portraits of horses.

A worthy heir to Stubbs, Herring's great love of his subjects is evident in his attention to detail and the delicacy with which he portrays the animals' features. From the start of his career, patrons from the upper echelons of British society commissioned portraits of their favourite horses and the winners of major races from him. The high point of his career came in 1845, when he became animal painter to the Duchess of Kent (1786-1861) and painted the first of his many commissions for her daughter Queen Victoria (1819-1901), Tajar and Hammon (Windsor Castle, inv. no. RCIN 401368).

The present painting, chosen by Beckett for the cover of the artist's catalogue raisonné (op. cit. supra), stands as testament to his talent. Don Antonio, the bay stallion with his gleaming coat and lively eyes, is shown with his master Mr Ferguson (the initial F is in the corner of the blanket held by the groom) and his trainer, who are sharing snuff to the left of the composition. In 1825, a year after the painting was completed, Ferguson sold Don Antonio, for whom the following years were his most successful, winning races in 1826 and five in 1827, including the Winyard Stakes at Stockton and the Silver Cup at Durham. Herring lends his painting a theatrical flavour in keeping with the excitement of the race: in the foreground the figures are bathed in a warm light, but the steel-grey sky in the background is tumultuous, heralding a storm to come.
