Further details
NIKLAS LAFRENSEN THE YOUNGER, CALLED NICOLAS LAVREINCE, THE BRIDE’S CARRIAGE OR THE VILLAGE BRIDE, PEN, INK AND WATERCOLOUR
Although Lavreince was familiar with tight compositions showing no more than three or four figures, and was closely associated with the gallant imagery of the rococo period, here he produced a scene of rare complexity borrowed from Watteau (1684-1721). Lavreince was probably not directly familiar with the painting The Village Bride, painted by the French master around 1710 and conserved since the 18th Century in Berlin (Charlottenburg Palace, Staatliche Garten und Schlösser Brandernburg, inv. GK I 5603; P. Rosenberg, M. Grasselli, Watteau, Paris, 1984, n° 11). However, the painting had acquired great renown: in addition to the many painted copies, Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1688-1754) had set about creating an engraving based on the painting. It was undoubtedly through this medium that Lavreince became acquained with the subject, and he chose to depict the scene in the same orientation as the engraving, as a mirror image of the painting. The Swedish artist also made a few adjustments: the pine tree, so central to Watteau's work, has here disappeared, and the costumes of the various participants are more in keeping with the taste of the late 18th century.
