A TERRACOTTA GROUP OF A SATYRESS WITH A DOG, PIERRE JOSEPH MICHEL (1737–1787)

The vitality of the gesture, the iconography, and the movement of this terracotta figure of a Satyress with a dog immediately recall the world of the sculptor Claude Michel, known as Clodion. This connection is not coincidental, for Pierre Joseph Michel, the author of this work, was in fact Clodion’s elder brother, with whom he shared his training, stylistic language, and influences. Like his brothers Claude and Nicolas, Pierre Joseph Michel trained in Paris in the 1750s under the guidance of their uncle, Lambert-Sigisbert Adam. Very little is known of Pierre Joseph Michel’s career, other than that he worked in a style close to that of Clodion, producing 'small figures for collectors' (P.-H. Pénet, G. Scherf (eds.), 2021, p. 248).

His corpus remains today both limited and little documented. While only seven works were recorded in the 1992 catalogue of the Clodion exhibition at the Musée du Louvre (A. L. Poulet, G. Scherf, Clodion 1738–1814, Paris, 1992), this number has since increased to eleven sculptures, according to the catalogue of the exhibition Les Adam: la sculpture en héritage (P.-H. Pénet, G. Scherf (eds.), Nancy, Musée des Beaux-Arts, 2021). In this context, the presence of a signed work by Pierre Michel is of particular importance: it allows to distinguish more clearly the activity of Pierre Joseph Michel from that of his illustrious brother, and to avoid the attributional confusions that have long affected their production.
