Pablo Picasso

PICASSO, Pablo (1881-1973). PICASSO, 347 Engravings, 16/3/68 - 5/10/68. [Paris: Draeger Frères for The Art Instiute of Chicago, and Galerie Louise Leiris, 1968.]

First edition, inscribed by Picasso to Norman Granz (1918-2001) and containing a felt-tip portrait of Granz in Velasquez-era costume and three caricature heads by the artist. This catalogue was produced for simultaneous exhibitions in Paris and Chicago, and includes erotic plates which were not included in the standard issue. Granz, the infamous impresario of Jazz who managed the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson, was introduced to Picasso in 1968 by Joseph Hirshhorn, shortly after Granz had retired to Switzerland. Picasso and Granz would become very good friends: 'one of the most joyful periods of my life was when I was in Europe and spent time on many occasions with Pablo Picasso. He would show me his new paintings and things that he was doing'. Granz would later return to Jazz in 1973 to establish a new label, which he named in honour of his recently deceased friend, Pablo. A selection of Picasso artworks from The Collection of Norman and Grete Granz was offered at Christie's New York in 2019.

The catalogue features 347 engravings which Picasso executed at Mougins in 1968, between March and October. These engravings function like a diary as, each day, Picasso engraved his thoughts onto copper. Hershorn, Norman Granz: The Man who used Jazz for Justice, 324.

Quarto (165 x 166mm). 347 engravings, 20 erotic plates on 14 leaves, numbered 296-315, three caricature heads by Picasso between plates 191 and 194. Pictorial jacket over plain card wraps, illustration by Picasso of Ganz in blue and black pen on verso, housed in black box (slight rubbing, minor creasing to edges). Provenance: Norman Granz (1918-2001; authorial presentation inscription on endpaper: 'Pour Norman Granz le 22.2.69, Picasso', and with portrait of Granz in blue and blank felt-tip).
