A group of six volumes, comprising:

WAUGH, Evelyn (1903-1966). Scoop. A Novel About Journalists. London: Chapman and Hall, 1938.
First edition in the first issue photomontage dust-jacket in imitation of Lord Beaverbrook’s Daily Express. Davis 15. Octavo. (Occasional very faint spotting mainly confined to margins.) Publisher’s black and red decorated cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine slightly sunned); original dust-jacket with wrap-around band (band lightly browned at spine, front panel of jacket lightly creased at head with associated tiny nicks and short tear, some light soiling with spine darkened); housed in a modern red quarter morocco clamshell box.

Presentation copy by Waugh of this first edition with essays on ‘U’ and ‘Non-U.’ Davis 99. Octavo. Ten full page monochrome illustrations by Osbert Lancaster (staining to pp.11-14). Publisher’s red cloth cover, lettered in silver on spine (spine ends and corners bumped, with one corner repaired); original pictorial dust-jacket (lower panel soiled, folds and edges reinforced with paper tape on verso). Provenance: authorial presentation inscription ‘A gruesome little book to remind you of the kingdom you have abjured, with warm gratitude for the Inquisition, Evelyn, Ascension Day 1956’ – Fremantle family presentation inscription dated 1984, to: – ‘Eden’.

Limited edition, one of only 250 copies signed and numbered by the author, of this ‘satire on European notions of “progress” imitated by an imaginary African nation’ (ODNB). Davis 8. Quarto, number 99 of 250 copies. One text- and nine full-page monochrome illustrations. Publisher’s purple cloth, upper cover stamped and spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, purple silk ribbon marker (edges and spine sunned, light bruising to head- and tailcaps and corners, ribbon worn); original textual dust-jacket (rear panel creased at head with associated closed tear and small chip, a few minor nicks to head and tail of spine).

– Waugh in Abyssinia. London: Longmans, Green and Co. 1936.
First edition, with the printed overslip on the front flap of the dust-jacket correcting the blurb that the author had originally objected to. Davis 14. Octavo. Publisher’s red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge stained red (spine ends faintly bruised); original pictorial dust-jacket designed by John French (minor creasing to bottom edge of lower panel, tiny nicks to head and foot of spine).

– Work Suspended. Two Chapters of an Unfinished Novel. London: Chapman & Hall, 1942.
Authorial presentation copy inscribed twice of this first edition of Waugh’s unfinished work started in July 1939 and interrupted by the Second World War. Davis 18. Octavo. (Occasional faint spotting.) Publisher’s red cloth, spine lettered in gilt; original textual dust-jacket (heavy spotting, occasional chips and nicks, spine browned). Provenance: authorial presentation inscription in red ink, signed ‘G.S.O. III 1(a) 4/5’ to: – ‘A.C.M.P.’ (recipient not identified) – second authorial presentation inscription in blue ink dated 4 May 1943, to: – Robert Henriques (1905-1967; commando, and advisor on Judaism to Waugh in his writing of Helena).

First edition of this collection of short stories. Davis 13. Octavo, additional decorative title. (Faint spotting confined to margins.) Publisher’s black and red decorative cloth by G.&J. Kitcat utilising their patented ‘Flexiback Binding’ with reinforced hinges, spine lettered in gilt; original dust-jacket (spien browned and lower panel lightly tanned, with a few negligible chips and tears at head- and tail of spine as well as at folds). Provenance: The Holliday Bookshop (New York bookseller’s ticket to rear pastedown).
