LARGE CEREMONIAL CASKET WITH COAT OF ARMS.

Southern German.Date: Dated 1729.
Origin: Probably Augsburg.
Material: Walnut and walnut burl veneer with inlays of maple, boxwood and other woods. Bronze and gilt bronze, silvered and gilt metal, paper.

Description:
Rectangular body resting on four sturdy, bronze-cast paw-shaped feet. On all four sides, delicate, crimped bastion panels with ornamental inlays. In front of each bevelled corner, a twisted column with an acanthus capital. On the sides, masterfully crafted, hinged handles with mascarons. The fire-gilded key escutcheon is likewise worked with a mascaron between volutes and foliage. The hinged lid rises in a stepped pattern towards the centre and is crowned with a small spherical finial. The interior is lined with dark green, slightly textured paper. The hinges are exceptionally precious and elaborately crafted, serving as decorative elements. The fittings of the lid hinge feature silver-plated volutes and shell motifs on a gilded ground. In the centre of the lid is the lock fitting with a mascarone and facing lions. Between them is a coat of arms featuring an eagle and a cross, as well as various tools. Then the date 1729 and, slightly concealed, the monogram ‘MK’..
Measurement: 37x48x37 cm.

Provenance:
Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia. Acquired in May 1957 and, according to an accompanying letter from the previous owner, previously owned by one of the Counts of Luxburg, who is said to have kept his medals in this casket.

Literature:
Heinrich Kreisel: The Art of German Furniture, Volume 1, Munich 1968.
For a comparison of individual decorative elements, see figs. 504 and 506.

This box may originally have been a guild chest. Judging by the two coats of arms, it is possible that it once belonged to a carpenters’ guild.
