LINCOLN CABINET MEMBERS. A collection of approximately 24 autographs, primarily consisting of letters, including several clipped signatures and documents from notable members of Abraham Lincoln's cabinet.

The collection includes: LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865). Address panel (unsigned) addressed in Lincoln's hand to the "Hon. Sec. of War.", with added directive to "...see Mr. Watson...". Very likely Peter H. WATSON (? -1855), assistant secretary of the War Department and one of Stanton's close friends. Watson had been an attorney on the McCormick Reaper trial and worked effectively to side Mr. Lincoln as a co-counsel. * SEWARD, William H. (1801-1862). Letter signed to Edwin Stanton, Washington, 18 March 1865, 1p., forwarding a communication regarding the alleged improper arrest and imprisonment of Mr Ronald McNichol and requesting an investigation of the case. * STANTON, Edwin M. (1814-1869). Autograph endorsement signed, 4 February 1864, on the verso of a letter from D. Howard Smith, permitting the extension of Smith’s parole to include his travel to Cincinnati to visit his wife. * CAMERON, Simon (1799-1899). Letter signed to President Ulysses S. Grant on Senate letterhead, Washington, 12 March 1875. 2pp. 8vo., bifolia. Commending Hon. H. C. Johnson, the appointed Commissioner of Customs. * McCULLOUGH, Hugh (1808-1895). Letter signed on Treasury letterhead to an H. Marsh, [Washington], 12 March 1867. 1p. Thanking his recipient for enclosing a copy of his “Guide Book to Emigrants”. * CAMERON, Simon (1799-1899). Autograph letter signed to A.B. Hamilton, Esq., Washington, 6 February 1813. Requesting his correspondence to “hand the enclosed $5 to the Historical Society in payment of my dues" * WELLES, Gideon (1802-1878). Autograph letter signed to Hon. H. A. Bisby on Department of the Interior letterhead, Washington, 28 February 1865. 1pp. 8vo., bifolium. Requesting his correspondent to hand papers to a Captain Hamer, the agent of Mrs. Hamer. * EVERETT, Edward. (1794-1865). Autograph letter signed to W. W. Richeson, Francis J. Hood, and R. H. Stanton, Cincinnati, 8 May 1857. 1pp., 8vo., bifolium. Accepting a request to deliver a speech on the character of Washington to the city of Maysville. * BLAIR, Montgomery (1813-1883). His signature tipped to a larger page beneath a photograph. * CHASE, Salmon. Autograph letter signed to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, Treasury Department, [Washington], 10 February 1862. 1pp. 8vo., bifolium. In part: “I am not sufficiently acquainted with the Rules and Regulations of the Navy Department to know whether a request made in the form enclosed will violate them. If not, there is certainly nothing wrong in making it, as you have already stated that the articles are both convenient and desirable for the forces…” * SEWARD, William H (1801-1862). Autograph letter signed to Edmund Stedman Esq of Washington D.C., [Washington], 29 November 1861. Regarding his desire to offer Stedman a position in the Attorney General’s office “but for the fact that many of my well-deserving friends in Missouri (good lawyers among them) have been reduced, by the calamities of these stern times, to absolute want”. * BLAIR, Montgomery.(1813-1883).
