BEARDSLEY, Aubrey (1872-1898)
The Yellow Book: An Illustrated Quarterly, Volume 1. Elkin Mathews & John Lane, [c.1894]
Presentation copy of Aubrey Beardsley's definitive publication of the Aesthetic and Decadent movements, encapsulating the transgressive spirit of fin-de-siècle art and literature. Its vivid yellow cover - an intentional reference to the sensationalist French literary tradition - paired with Beardsley's illustrations subverted Victorian artistic conventions. Featuring contributions from scholarly and artistic figures such as Henry James and Max Beerbohm, the periodical became synonymous with the artistic upheavals of the 'Yellow Nineties.' Its reputation for rebellion was solidified through its infamous association with Oscar Wilde's trial, which, though erroneously reported, cemented its link to cultural dissent. Today, The Yellow Book is celebrated as a landmark in modernist aesthetics' evolution and a pivotal fin-de-siècle innovation.

This copy is presented by Beardsley with the following inscription: 'Mrs. Patrick Campbell from Aubrey Beardsley who is an unwholesome and incompetent fellow.' Campbell, one of the most notable actresses of the late Victorian and Edwardian stage, epitomised the era's defiant spirit. Her pioneering approach to emotive stagecraft marked her career; Campbell's repertoire ranged from Shakespearean classics to contemporary dramas, with her most iconic role as Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, a character explicitly crafted for her. Beardsley's inscription and accompanying illustration of her on p.156 offer a fascinating glimpse into the relationship between these two avant-garde figures. The caricature reportedly displeased Campbell, reflecting Beardsley's tendency to challenge the norms of portraiture through exaggeration and provocation. Together, Beardsley and Campbell exemplify the intellectual and artistic currents of the fin de siècle, with their works embodying a shared resistance to societal norms. This artefact, blending Beardsley's satirical genius with Campbell's theatrical legacy, encapsulates the interplay of rebellion, artistry, and modernity that defined their era.

Octavo (200 x 160mm). Original bright yellow pictorial cloth (some faint soiling with spine slightly dulled and with a few faint marks, spine ends and corners fractionally rubbed, upper inner hinge splitting); contained in a modern yellow and black morocco clamshell box.
